Adam Bohorič () (c. 1520 – November 20, 1598) was a Slovene Protestant preacher, teacher and author of the first grammar of Slovene.[1]
Bohorič was born in the market town of Rajhenburg (now known as Brestanica, a part of Krško) in the Duchy of Styria, on the border between Lower Carniola and Lower Styria (now in Slovenia).[2] In 1584, he wrote his most important work, Articae horulae succisivae.[3] This book, written in Latin, is the first grammar of Slovene and also the first Slovene normative guide. In this work Bohorič set the rules for the first Slovene alphabet, now called the Bohorič alphabet (Slovene: bohoričica), which was used up to the 1840s, when it was replaced by Gaj's Latin alphabet (Slovene: gajica).
